Abstract:

Contains mostly handwritten correspondence with some other Civil War related materials such as payment vouchers, receipts, discharge papers, and printed circulars. The materials mostly concern the conflict between Union and Confederate forces in the New Mexico campaign in the American Southwest. Correspondence includes letters from Texas Confederate soldiers serving in Sibley's Brigade and letters from Union soldiers and family members stationed in Arizona and New Mexico. Includes payment vouchers for several Union soldiers and discharge papers for one of them, John B. Smith. Also includes a confirmation of military service for Juan Arroyo, a Mexican-American who served as a first lieutenant in Graydon's Company of the New Mexico Volunteers. Printed materials include a proclamation by the governor of New Mexico in response to an invasion by Texas armed forces, and a circular informing California volunteers about available veteran benefits after they are discharged and a re-enlistment bonus. Also includes typescript transcriptions of handwritten correspondence.
