Abstract:

Consists of original and typescript copies of letters written by Charles Hilton to his family in Nova Scotia. He describes California, his activities gold mining in Barton's Bar (Yuba County) and the Yuba River, and writes about settling permanently in California, his trip back to California via New York and Nicaragua, aboard the schooner Star of the West, with his wife and son, and about his life in Centerville, California (near Misson San Jose). Also includes a letter from his mother, in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

Charles Hilton came to the California gold mines in 1850 from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, via Panama. In 1855 he returned to California, via Nicaragua, with his wife Mary and son Charley, to settle in Centerville, California.
