Anthony Boucher was born William Anthony Parker White on August 21, 1911, in Oakland, California. He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1932, then obtained a M.A. in German from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1938, he was married to Phyllis Price, whose father Lawrence Marsden Price was a professor in the German Department at UC Berkeley. In 1942, after living for a few years in Los Angeles, he and Phyllis returned to Berkeley where they remained for the rest of their lives. Among Boucher's many literary contributions, he served as mystery book editor for the San Francisco Chronicle, contributor and reviewer for Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, creator, writer, and announcer for "Golden Voices" on KPFA radio, fantasy reviewer for the Chicago Sun-Times and New York Herald (under another pseudonym, H.H. Holmes), mystery reviewer for the New York Times Book Review, reviewer for Opera News, and editor for True Crime Detective and Mercury Mysteries. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Mystery Writers of America in 1945 and received the Edgar Award three times for excellence in criticism. He and J. Francis McComas founded the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1949, and Boucher served, first as co-editor then as sole editor of the magazine until 1958. He also wrote seven novels, edited numerous anthologies of detective and fantasy fiction, and translated stories from French, Spanish, and Portuguese (he was an early translator of Jorge Luis Borges). Following his death in 1968, the annual Anthony Boucher Memorial Mystery Convention, a.k.a. "Bouchercon," was named in his honor. The first convention was held in Santa Monica, California in May 1970. Phyllis White was a regular guest of honor, frequently speaking and participating in panel discussions, until her death in 2000.
