Letters and manuscripts of musicians, 1789-1926

Abstract:

Collection consists of 37 letters from composers, conductors, musicians, and vocalists. Includes 4 letters by Felix Mendelssohn (including a musical composition in four parts for three instruments, with directions for interpretation), 4 letters from Anton Seidl, 3 from Charles Gounod, and 3 of Franz Liszt. Also contains one letter from each of the following composers: Franz Josef Haydn, Richard Wagner (to Ludwig Spohr), Hector Berlioz, Johann Strauss, Jr. (including 4 bars of the Blue Danube), Edvard Grieg, Engelbert Humperdinck, Pietro Mascagini, Camille Saint-Saëns, Léo Delibes, César Franck, and Jules Massenet. Also includes 2 letters from contralto Maria Malibran, 2 letters from conductor and composer Walter Henry Rothwell, violinist Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst, conductor Hans von Bülow, Scottish composer Alexander Campbell Mackenzie, violinist August Emil Wilhelm, contralto Ernestine Schumann-Heink (to William Andrews Clark), and baritone David Scull Bispham. The collection also contains a 1916 letter from the actress Sarah Bernhardt. Ten letters in the collection are undated.
