Background
- Biographical / historical:
-
Founded in June 1964, the West Oakland Christian Parish was understood as a "unique venture providing opportunity for Christian witness and encounter with the personal and social problems of the inner city to be found in West Oakland. Originally an idea conceived in the minds of a group of students at Pacific School of Religion who have since become its basic staff, it is a ministry which is ecumenical in character and autonomous in structure, serving the community in cooperation with the local churches in the area and the Oakland Council of Churches; a ministry which develops community responsibility, rooted in a sense of personal worth."
