The Lemon Grove Fruit Growers Association Records documents the organization’s financial records from the 1920s and 30s. The
majority of the collection is comprised of Board of Directors meetings, amendments to by-laws, and minutes of stockholders
meetings. Several of the Board of Directors minutes details issues like stock transfers, California Fruit Grower’s shipment
records, bank balances, requests for membership, and fruit pricing protocol. Also included are detailed records of employee
interactions, bank transfers, and bills presented to the Board for approval. This collection consists primarily of paper materials
and two rolls of microfilm (box 1).
Organized in 1908 as a cooperative organization of lemon, grapefruit, and orange grove owners, The Lemon Grove Fruit Growers
Association was affiliated with Sunkist growers. Originally, the plot of land (then known as La Mesa Springs) was purchased
Robert Allison in 1869. As more farmers began to settle in the area during the early 20th century, there was considerable
growth in the production of produce and livestock. By the mid-1920’s, The Lemon Grove Fruit Growers Association was responsible
for growing the largest crop of lemons and tomatoes in the Unites States.
