The Women's Unit was created in view of the fact that
women of Mexican decent carry the burden of their gender in addition to their
racial and class status and that efforts by the CSRC to address and rectify
Chicano oppression largely ignored sexism. The Women's Unit was officially
established in 1985 to define and promote Chicana / Mexicana Studies and to
advance the social, political, and economic welfare of the Chicana / Mexicana
community.
