This collection includes letters, a letterbook, and legal documents from Alta California and the Sandwich Islands.
James Henry Gleason was born in Plymouth on October 22, 1823. He came to the Sandwich Islands by way of Cape Horn in 1841.
In 1845 he sailed to Monterey, Alta California, where he married Caterina Demetria Watson and lived until his death in 1861.
He was County Clerk and Recorder of Monterey County in 1857.
